Project Type: Landfill
Owner: Fairbanks North Star Borough
OCC successfully bid the expansion of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) solid waste landfill, associated access, and perimeter roads. The work required gravel extraction at Tanana Lakes to obtain sufficient structural fill material. FNSB anticipated that gravel extraction operations alone would take a general contractor three construction seasons, well into 2015. OCC devised alternative methods to fast-track the project and completed all activities within 13 weeks.
In addition to gravel placement, OCC paved 68,000 sf of parking and roads, installed a storm system, and landscaped six acres (surface prep, seeding, and fertilization). The landscaping efforts produced 5,000 cubic yards of topsoil to be stored for 2015 landscaping operations. OCC performed several acres of wetlands mitigation under the oversight of both local and federal agencies, such as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and USACE. The improvements also included a recreation area complete with a community beach for swimming.
